Abstract
Convection of a Cosserat fluid
The question is discussed to which areas of geophysics the mechanics of micropolar fluids can be applied. As a model for the partly molten Gutenberg low-velocity layer a horizontal layer consisting of a micropolar fluid is introduced. An analytical solution is deduced for the problem of hydrodynamic stability. The assumption is made that the boundary planes are rigid and kept at constant temperatures, the temperature of the lower boundary plane being higher than that of the upper one.
