Geodynamics and Thermodynamics

Lecture, 2 hours per week for geophysicists. A tutorial of one hour
per semester week is offered for this purpose.

Topic: Applications of thermodynamics and solid state physics to
geophysics, Belonoshko-Saxena equation of state, virial equation,
Duan's variant, the zeroth law (temperature), the first law (energy),
the second law (entropy), enthalpy, free enthalpy, applications to
carbon compounds, Earth's endogenous carbon cycle, Clausius-Clapeyron
equation, melting curves and melting entropy, thermodynamic parameters
including Grüneisen parameter, PREM, dislocations, migrations, rock
creep, core paradox, phase diagrams for the Earth's core, Lindemann´s
melting point curve, the temperature dependence of the diffusion
coefficient, the temperature dependence of the viscosity of silicate
solids and melts, elastic parameters, Young´s modulus, coefficient of
thermal expansion, Mie-Grüneisen equation of state, Brillouin zones,
Debye theory, Birch-Murnaghan equation of state, high pressure
geophysics, pyrolite model and piclogite model of the upper mantle,
phase diagrams of Mg2SiO4, MgSiO3, Fe; Melting point curves as a
function of pressure, flood basalt rise in a mantle diapir, seismic
tomography beneath hot spots, plume rise according to Olson (1995),
geochemical reservoirs of the mantle, C1 chondritic Earth model,
LOSIMAG C1, geotherms, geothermal structure of northern America.
