The Institute of Geosciences looked back on 20 years of its existence with a festive event on November 9, 2012. Students and staff as well as interested guests were invited to the auditorium and to a subsequent celebration in the institute building at Burgweg.

With the large-scale research projects (e.g. DFG priority program "Biogeochemical Interfaces in Soil"External link, EU project Umbrella) or the top research project INFLUINSExternal link, in which the large-scale fluid dynamics in the Thuringian Basin are also investigated from the point of view of the opportunities and risks of the use of the subsurface as well as the sustainable protection of drinking water reserves, it is documented that the Institute of Geosciences is a central and indispensable partner for the state of Thuringia. Also by establishing and operating the Thuringian Seismic NetworkExternal link or the geodynamic observatory in MoxaExternal link, the Institute of Geosciences performs indispensable tasks with regard to the long-term observation of possible geohazards for the state of Thuringia.

In addition, the Institute of Geosciences, with its now two bachelor's and three master's degree programs in the fields of geosciences (geology, geophysics, mineralogy) and biogeosciences, is the center for the university training of competent and competitive graduates for Thuringian SMEs, companies, public authorities and municipalities.
