In addition to liquid and solid samples, the field of nano- and microparticle analysis has become increasingly important in recent decades. Due to the large surface-to-volume ratio, nanoparticles (NP) offer an enormously large surface area for potential pollutant adsorption and transport. Using the ‘single particle/single cell’ ICP-MS technology, it is possible to quantitatively determine the size, number of particles and elemental composition of (bio)colloids in the range between approx. 20-5000 nanometres (nm) directly in (aqueous) suspension. (Nano)particles can be quantified individually and separately after simple dilution to approx.104-106 particles/mL without further sample preparation, for O2- or CO2-sensitive samples directly in the inert glovebox.
